Sticking to Gluten-free Diet Aids Celiac Recovery, Study Says

Sixty-eight percent of celiac disease patients who strictly adhered to a gluten-free diet for one year showed normal morphology of the small-bowel mucosa, researchers from Finland reported in The American Journal of Gastroenterology. The 32% of patients who had incomplete mucosal recovery had more malabsorption, higher serum levels of antibodies to transglutaminase-2 and greater small-bowel mucosal damage when disease was diagnosed. Researchers suggest “a more personalized approach” may be needed for determining follow-up schedules. Gluten Free Abstract
