Study: Gluten-sensitive people often do not get celiac tests

Australian researchers said many people who report gluten sensitivity have not been tested for celiac disease and about 25% of those who adopt a gluten-free diet still have symptoms. Data showed 44% had started a gluten-free diet on their own, 21% did so on the advice of an alternative health care professional and the rest went gluten-free on the suggestion of a general practitioner or dietitian. Researcher Jessica Biesiekierski said people should see a gastroenterologist before going gluten-free because testing for celiac disease can be less accurate and take longer if gluten is already removed from the diet.
