Essential duties:

  • Greet and prepare patients for health care visits by accompanying them to the exam room
  • Interview patients to obtain a current, accurate medical history, medication lists, allergies, and other relevant information; updates the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Assist with patient visit, including but not limited to preparing exam room, accompany providers during examination, assisting providers with procedures performed in the office, dispensing sample medications as authorized, completing orders for new prescriptions, refills, labs and/or imaging orders
  • Ensure appropriate and adequate level of supplies present in exam rooms by routinely assessing and restocking exam rooms on a weekly basis and prn as needed
  • Schedule endoscopic procedures, diagnostic tests, and office visits for the physicians as per established office protocols, including utilization of EHR
  • Document and/or scan necessary patient demographic, insurance information and/or records into EHR
  • Verify insurance benefits and obtains necessary precertification, if applicable
  • Communicate procedure information and patient instructions in a timely manner, including Rx preps, as appropriate
  • Document clinical information (medications, allergies, procedure scheduling worksheet) accurately, in the proper location in the EMR, and in a timely manner
  • Handle patient phone calls in a timely manner, and documents in EHR
  • Confirm appointments/procedures and collects balances due, if applicable
  • Follow up with patient to reschedule any missed appointments or procedures
  • Work collaboratively with physicians, mid-level providers, medical assistants, and all other members of the healthcare team, to optimize patient care
  • Perform additional clerical duties such as writing letters, researching information, filing, and mailing documents
  • All other duties as assigned
Due to the nature of this role, the employee’s physical presence in the workplace is an essential function of the job.

Education/Experience/Certifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, ICD-10 and CPT coding is required
  • Knowledge of gastroenterology is a plus
  • Knowledge of eCW (eClinical Works) is a plus
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Customer service experience and scheduling in a healthcare setting
