What you need to know about FibroScan®

If you’re a new patient of Florida Research Institute, our team members may recommend you receive a FibroScan®. A FibroScan® is a noninvasive ultrasound device that measures liver scarring, called fibrosis, caused by certain liver diseases. Like a traditional ultrasound exam, a FibroScan® is quick and painless. It provides a non-surgical option to assessing liver damage.
Our team may recommend a FibroScan® test if you have one of the following liver conditions:
  • Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease/NAFLD (which is an accumulation of fat in the liver)
  • Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis/NASH (a type of NAFLD that includes inflammation and liver cell damage, along with fat build-up)

How do I prep for a FibroScan®

A smart device with Your care team will determine your eligibility and provide full prep information. Generally you should avoid eating or drinking anything (water is fine) for at least three hours before the scan. You can continue taking any prescribed medicine, but you cannot have a FibroScan® if you’re pregnant or have an implantable device (like a defibrillator or a pacemaker).audio/video capability (cell phone, tablet or computer)

What happens during the scan?

You will lie down on the exam table and place your right arm above your head. The right side of your abdomen will be exposed, so we recommend you avoid wearing any one-piece clothing items (jumpsuit, dress, etc.). You do not have to remove jewelry near the site of the scan.
The technician will feel your abdomen to find the right place to perform the scan. When the scan begins, sound waves pass through your skin, to your liver and back. It should not hurt, although you may feel gentle pressure on your skin. Overall, the scan takes 10-15 minutes to perform.

What happens after the exam and what do you my results mean?

When the FibroScan® is complete, you can return to your normal activity. There is no recovery period. The scan results will be sent to one of our physicians, who evaluates the results and discusses them with you at your next appointment. Results and treatment options vary based on each liver disease.
