Gallbladder

The gallbladder is a small pouch, pear-shaped organ that sits under the liver in the upper abdomen. It stores bile produced by the liver. When food is broken down in the stomach and intestines, bile is released from the gallbladder through a tube called the common bile duct, which connects the gallbladder and liver to the first part of the small intestine.

Common gallbladder disorders

Cholecystitis
Cholecystitis is inflammation of the gallbladder caused by a gallstone, resulting in severe pain and fever. Surgery may be necessary if the inflammation recurs.

Gallbladder cancer
Gallbladder cancer is a rare disease that is often misdiagnosed as gallstones due to similar symptoms. It can be difficult to diagnose accurately.

Gallstones
Gallstones are formed when certain substances in bile solidify in the gallbladder. These stones can range in size from as small as a grain of sand to as large as a golf ball and can be either hard or soft, smooth or jagged. Although gallstones are a common and typically harmless condition, they can be quite painful.

Gallstone pancreatitis
Gallstone pancreatitis occurs when a gallstone blocks the pancreatic ducts, leading to inflammation.
