Duties and Responsibilities:
Treats gastroenterology patients by developing a diagnosis; establishing patient care objectives; defining interventions, schedules, and timetables; providing physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to patients, families, and friends to understand patient conditions, medications, and self-care skills; noting changing conditions and needs; re-evaluating care objectives.

Develops gastroenterology patient care plans by obtaining medical histories; examining patients; documenting patient physical condition, psychological status, and influencing social factors; conferring with family and friends; developing a diagnosis; establishing patient care objectives; defining interventions, schedules, and timetables.

Provides gastroenterology patient care by providing treatments and services involving disorders and conditions of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract; performing procedures such as flexible sigmoidoscopies, infrared coagulation treatment of hemorrhoids (IRC), review & interpretation of capsule endoscopy, writing prescriptions; coordinating with other healthcare providers; providing physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to patients, families, and friends; collaborating with physicians.

Teaches healthcare requirements by establishing patient care goals; instructing patient, family, and friends to understand condition, medications, and self-care skills; answering questions; providing information and resources.

Evaluates gastroenterology patient care by reviewing patient records; noting changing conditions and needs; measuring health outcomes against patient care standards; re-evaluating care objectives; modifying nursing care plan; making or recommending necessary adjustments;

Assures quality care by adhering to professional standards, organization policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and maintaining cooperative relationships among healthcare team members.

Maintains safe, secure, and healthy patient care environment by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols, medication administration and storage procedures, and controlled substance regulations; adhering to organization standards and policies, and to legal regulations; alerting others regarding potential concerns.

Documents patient care services by charting in patient records.
